 DAVID TOBEY'S COLOR IMAGINARIES

PAGE 2 OF 2: HIGH GLOSS COLOR ENAMELS ON CANVAS
(all sizes in inches)

"Color added expands the challenge on viewers' imaginations. Starting with the addition of small areas of a second color. . . . later the secondaries are larger and compete with the glistening blacks . . . finally a crescendo of motion . . . as multiple colors and forms suggestive of figurative beings with abstract and then abstract forms alone in surface movement. . .all sometimes appearing as if attempting escape from the canvas plane. . . at other times they appear quite happy in their confinement."

". . . In line with the concept of Rorschach inkblot tests, none of the paintings were titled until after their third exhibition . . . the first two held in Westchester County, NY and the most recent in New York City in May, 2012 . . . visitors to the galleries were prompted to supply their own titles based upon their description of what each of the paintings communicated to them personally.

"Also, with the exception of a few of the early "Imaginaries", most of them are signed on the back of the canvas, since some viewers found a number of them more easy to "read" when positioned differently from the way they were exhibited in the shows -- horizontal to vertical and some even upside down. This is a practice that may well be followed in future exhibitions, as it did create a great deal of interest and conversation at the openings of the past few exhibitions."
